John the Baptist Prepares the Way
1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ ”
4 John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
11“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
The Baptism of Jesus
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
So in this chapter we see that John the Baptist called out the Pharisees to stop given the excuse of having "Abraham" as father. Beloved if we call ourselves children of God but yet keep on sinning, God can cut us off from His kingdom and give it to other people. Like the Apostle Paul said in Romans 6 verse 1 to 2; What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? We can no longer keep on wallowing in any form of sin. The grace given us through Jesus Christ is not a license for us to continue to sin.
The bible says, when we come to Jesus Christ, we've become a new creation, the old things has passed away, and all things are made anew. So therefore we must work out our salvation with fear and trembling as the word of God tells us.
Jesus Christ said, the first shall be the last and the last first. So if every believer doesn't make conscious effort to live a holy life and bear good fruit for Christ, we can be left behind when the rapture comes, and the very people who we thought are sinful would be raptured. God is able to turn stones into Abraham descendants, so don't think you're Christ followers so that's the end of everything. Christ came for the whole world so anyone who believes in His name He's given them power to be children of God.
But if you don't obey His commands and bear good fruits, which is the fruit of the Holy Spirit in Galatians chapter 5 verse 22-26
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
If you see your self as a believer, then you've crucified the flesh with its passions and desires; therefore, you bear good fruits both physical in how we dress as Christians, how we talk, the manner we carry ourselves to the world and Spiritual in our closeness to God through effective prayers, fasting and reading the word of God.
Beloved, God cannot be mocked, whatever a man grows, he shall reap it. And if we the so called believers don't bear good fruits that leads to repentance, we will end up in the lake of fire. Beware!
